Airplane missed landing strip, stops in front yard of Kansas home

FORD COUNTY—A Kansas pilot avoided injury after a mishap just after 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 1st, in Ford County. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2009 Turbo-prop S2R-T34 fixed-wing, single-engine aircraft piloted by Dawson Lance Dreyer, 23, of Spring Hill, had landing gear issues. The airplane missed the grass landing strip south of Center Street and west of South Washington Street in Bucklin. The aircraft came to a spot in a residential yard at 710 West Center Street in Bucklin. There were no injuries, just minor damages to the aircraft from the landing that were repaired on the scene. Man accused of intentionally contaminating food at Kansas steakhouse

JOHNSON COUNTY—On Thursday, April 25th, the Leawood Police Department received a tip that someone may have intentionally contaminated the food at a Leawood restaurant. Police immediately began an investigation that led to the Hereford House, 5001 Town Center Drive in Leawood, where detectives spoke with restaurant management to identify a suspect, 21-year-old Jace Christian Hanson of Kansas City. On Monday, April 29th, Hanson was charged with food adulteration, according to the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office. The alleged crime occurred between March 26th and April 25th. Customers who ate at the steakhouse between those dates and experienced health issues are to contact Leawood police.According to the district attorney’s office, Hanson was scheduled for a court appearance on Thursday, May 2nd. Deadly Kansas tornado had winds of 140 mph

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY—Just after 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30th, an EF3 tornado struck the Pottawatomie County community of Westmoreland with wind gusts of 140 mph, according to a preliminary damage survey by the National Weather Service in Topeka. The tornado was on the ground for eight minutes and traveled 2.58 miles with a maximum width of 100 yards. One person died in the storm, and three were injured. The tornado also destroyed 22 homes, three RVs, and five outbuildings. It damaged another 13 homes and one commercial building. (Hays Post)

Kansas man dies in mower accident

COWLEY COUNTY—One person died in an accident just before 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30th, in Cowley County. According to Sheriff Dave Faletti, a Brush Hot riding lawnmower driven by 82-year-old George Hawkins Jr. of Arkansas was traveling in a north ditch in the 13000 block of 212 Road.The mower’s front wheels dug into the mud and overturned onto Hawkins, pinning him to the ground. Several Good Samaritans stopped, called 91-1-, and got the mower off Hawkins. Life-saving measures were administered by deputies and were taken over by Winfield EMS. EagleMed was requested to launch and land at the scene. Before EagleMed’s arrival, Winfield EMS transported Hawkins to William Newton Memorial Hospital. Hawkins was later pronounced deceased at the hospital. (Hays Post)

Woman from Hays hospitalized after car, trash truck crash

ELLIS COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 2nd, in Ellis County. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2006 International trash truck, driven by Terrence F. Riedel, 55, of Gorham, was northbound on U. S.183 Bypass on 27th Street and moved onto the northbound shoulder in an attempt to avoid a collision with a southbound 2000 Buick LeSabre driven by Gwyn E. Legleiter, 47, of Hays. The Buick crossed the centerline and traveled off the roadway to the left. The car and trash truck collided on the northbound shoulder. EMS transported Legleiter to Hays Medical Center. Riedel was not injured. Legleiter was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP. (Hays Post)

Driver hospitalized after motor home crash in northwest Kansas

GOVE COUNTY—The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2000 motor home driven by Melvin Harlan Boll, 83, Littleton, Colorado, was eastbound on Interstate 70 at Quinter. The motor home lost brakes and power steering. The driver took the Quinter exit, crossed Kansas 212 Highway, and struck a tree. EMS transported Boll to Gove County Medical Center. An 81-year-old passenger was not injured. Boll and the passenger were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP. (Hays Post)
